Cooking A Boston Butt Recipe

Course Main Course
Cuisine American

Ingredients

  • 1 Boston Butt (pork shoulder roast)
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons of paprika
  • 2 tablespoons of garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons of onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon of kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon of freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 cup of water or chicken broth

Instructions

  • Select your preferred cooking method for the Boston butt, whether it’s an oven, grill, or smoker.
  • If using an oven, preheat it to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Allow the oven, grill, or smoker to preheat for at least 15-20 minutes to ensure it reaches the desired temperature.
  • Remove the Boston butt from the refrigerator and let it come to room temperature for about 30 minutes. This will ensure the meat cooks evenly. Season the Boston butt with your preferred marinade or dry rub, and coat it evenly.
  • Place the Boston butt in a roasting pan with the fat cap facing up. This allows the fat to melt and baste the meat as it cooks.
  • Cover the roasting pan tightly with aluminum foil. This helps to trap moisture and create a steamy and stable temperature for the Boston butt to cook in. Ensure that the foil is tightly sealed to prevent any steam from escaping.
  • Place the covered roasting pan in the preheated oven and cook for 3-4 hours, or until the internal temperature of the meat reaches 195-205 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Check on the Boston butt periodically to ensure it is cooking evenly. Avoid opening the oven door too often to prevent temperature fluctuations.
  • Once the Boston butt has finished cooking, remove the roasting pan from the oven and let the meat rest for 30 minutes before carving. This allows the juices to redistribute throughout the meat, producing a more tender and juicy final product.
  • After the Boston butt has rested, carve it into slices or shred it for pulled pork. Serve with your favorite barbecue sauce and sides, and enjoy.
